Pandaren Monk Generates $1.1 Million Worth Of Wishes…

In November, Blizzard released a Pandaren Monk in-game pet for World of Warcraft on the company’s online store, with half of the proceeds from the sale pledged to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The $10 item generated $1.1 million for charity. The Pandaren Monk, an adorable little anthropomorphic panda that follows players around as they explore Azeroth, was one of two in-game pets Blizzard introduced in early November, the first virtual items for World of Warcraft offered in the Blizzard store. Both the Monk and Lil’ KT were priced at $10 apiece, but only the panda man there would split his proceeds with the Make-A-Wish Foundation until the end of the year. Doing a quick bit of math, that means that Blizzard sold 220,000 Pandaren Monks between the release in November and December 31st. That’s some impressive numbers right there. “We’ve had a long relationship with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and we’re proud to support the priceless work they do for children,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “This donation also reflects the spirit and generosity of our players – their enthusiasm for World of Warcraft and for supporting a good cause made this possible.” Let’s keep in mind that this promotion also generated $1.1 million in sales for Blizzard, who I am certain didn’t spend that much creating an in-game pet. Everybody wins! Blizzard teasing aside, this is a tremendous show of support from World of Warcraft players, adorable in-game pet or no, generating an impressive amount of money in a short period of time for those who need it the most. “Thanks to Blizzard Entertainment and World of Warcraft players around the world, we will be able to grant the heartfelt wishes of even more courageous children with life-threatening medical conditions,” said David Williams, Make-A-Wish Foundation of America president and chief executive officer. “This generosity is helping us bring hope, strength and joy to children when they – and their families – are facing an unimaginably difficult time in their young lives.” Well done, WoW fans!

If All You Need Is Love, Then You’re In Luck [Harmonix]

The Beatles’ classic “All You Need is Love,” once exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of The Beatles: Rock Band, is finally making its way to the PlayStation 3 and Wii, with its charitable intentions intact. Released for the Xbox 360 in September of last year, “All You Need is Love,” quickly became the fastest selling song in Rock Band history , perhaps due in part to all proceeds from the sale going to the Doctors Without Borders charity. Now the song is coming to the Rock Band Music Store for the Wii and PS3, with all proceeds once again going to the charity organization. “All You Need is Love” is due out for the Wii on February 17th, with PS3 players waiting until March 4th to grab the music.

Bungie Donation Points to Halo: Reach Multiplayer in May…

December 13th, 2009

Free Xbox 360, PS3 Slim, iPod, Wii or iPhone

Earlier today, a news release accompanying the Halo: Reach opening cinematic said the multiplayer beta would begin this coming spring. Now, of all things, the description of a charity auction lot pegs the date no earlier than April 28. The listing (above) comes from Thursday’s Child’s Play Charity Auction Dinner in Seattle. Bungie donated not only a crate full of games and studio swag, but also a visit to the studio’s “top secret lair” and “access to the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta before it goes live to the public.” Winning bidder, and up to seven friends, supply their own travel, Bungie provides the network and food and, of course, the game. “Valid only between 4/8/2010 and 4/28/2010 – any day within that range is acceptable,” says the listing. April 29, 2010 is a Thursday. Perhaps it could begin then. Most likely, “Spring 2010″ now means “May 2010.” You know the drill. I’ve emailed Bungie. They say anything, it goes here. Update: A Microsoft spokesperson has replied: We’re excited that there is so much interest and enthusiasm for the “Halo: Reach” multiplayer beta coming this spring. We’re not able to confirm any details about the exact timing or content of the beta at this time but we look forward to revealing more details in the future. Reach MP Beta – Date Narrowed Down? See the REAL Lego Rock Band at Ümloud! [Charity]

December 11th, 2009

Free Xbox 360, PS3 Slim, iPod, Wii or iPhone

Yesterday, my ears were ringing a little too loudly to make heads or tails of all the flickr galleries and YouTube posts on Ümloud! But today I finally found a video of my friends’ band rocking out. My buddy Andrew and his housemates have been playing Rock Band for ages, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see them there at the event. What I didn’t know is that they’d be bringing their LEGO heads. Other great acts of the night include Ironheade in full cosplay gear and the girls that rocked the Dixie Chicks. That pink and black smudge with the tiara in the bottom right hand corner of the screen is actually me acting as Stage Manager Fairy, writing out Chris Kohler’s script for the next act. Next year I think I’ll procure walkie-talkies for the stage crew. Or possibly a bullhorn just for myself. Either way, I still don’t have a voice today — but I have a ton of fun memories and a wonderful feel-good glow that comes from donating time, money and swag to Child’s Play. Thank you to everybody who came out. We’ll see you next year!
